How to Send a Favicon Collection To Your Website

The favicon is a small icon that appears in your website address bar, in search results, and in various other locations. The icon is used in favourites menus, and it is also used as an icon when a user drags shortcuts to their desktop.

Note: WordPress implemented a Site Icon feature that enables favicons in Version 4.3, and we previously wrote about how one could add additional icons to WordPress' default and limit icon options. The problem as we've experienced it - for such a simple thing - is that that a powerful icon presence usually requires coding or a bloated and unnecessary plugin. Further, when additional icon sets are required by a newer device or standards, those assets must be updated.

As part of the website favicon image creation process we generate a range of icons, including a true .ico file (the ico file actually includes embedded images (often scaled to 16x16px, 32x32px, 48x48px, 64x64px, 128x128px and 256x256px), although a .png file seems to be the standard for most engines (our logs show Google looking for a .png file before anything else). We place a few images and documents in your web root, and reference others in your document head.

  Creating a Favicon Collection

The favicon options are shown in the 'Website' module, but you may also find them in the SEO Module.

Creating a collection requires that you drag an image that is at least 500px by 500px into the target upload area. Give the collection a name and description, and save. The collection will be created and ready to be sent to your website.

  Updating Website Favicon Collection

Once created, you should send the collection to your website. Select your website and icon collection, and define a colour that is often used for Microsoft 'Tiles'. Once done, click 'Send'. The collection is immediately updated on your website.

As a result of caching issues, it may be a short time before your icon is shown. It may be a couple of days before the icon is updated in search results.

  Reviewing and Editing Icons

The website icon archive maintains a record of all your created collections and all active icon assignments. Edit and Review any collection from these tables.

  Icon Maintenance

Because we have a record of the current icon collection assigned to each of your websites, when a new icon is required (not uncommon with Apple's incessant need to change things), we will automatically update your website with the new icon(s).
