How Do I Migrated GoDaddy (or other) Microsoft Email Directly to Microsoft?

GoDaddy makes it very difficult to create the required Graph application in Azure that supports your business through Yabber. We always recommend signing up for your Microsoft subscription directly through Microsoft and not third-party providers for this reason. Creating an application through your native Microsoft account is a straight-forward process. GoDaddy, however, provides significant roadblocks that increases application complexity, and it will be a far more problematic and time-consuming process. While the GoDaddy backend looks like Microsoft, it is essentially owned by GoDaddy. You cannot create or activate an Azure tenant, access Azure Entra ID properly, register applications, create app secrets or certificates, create or attach Azure subscriptions, grant application admin or global admin for Azure, enable Graph API permissions, or control tenant-wide authentication flows.

Microsoft 365 Hosted Email: If you're already using Microsoft 365 email that was set up and is managed directly through Microsoft, you can ignore this FAQ and consider the FAQ titled "Creating a Microsoft 365 Azure Application".

Does the Problem Apply to Me?: If you're able to log into portal.azure.com and successfully select the 'Manage Microsoft Entra ID' option from the Azure welcome screen , then the issue does not apply to you.

Signing up for email through GoDaddy is an uninformed retail push that competes directly with best business outcomes (they also offer less storage space). If you've signed up with GoDaddy email, we need to jump through a number of hurdles... and it won't be pretty. This FAQ introduces the GoDaddy email migration options that are least likely to impact on your operation.

Competitive Advantage: The connectivity between your Microsoft systems and Yabber put you at a clear competitive advantage in terms of your marketing efforts and business systems. Most of your competitors are operating with numerous systems bolted together and held together by metaphorical string, while your systems are wholly integrated and fully compliant. Your integration allows for scalability, agility, and a compliance firewall. While every other solution you have seen is nothing more than third-rate technical debt, your systems are absolutely industry leading.

The Easiest Option: The easiest option is the last option on this page = "Force Tenant Takeover". It's usually the option we recommend given its simplicity. However, it can take a few days for their system to update.

Defederate the GoDaddy Tenant [ LEAVING GODADDY ]

Defederating GoDaddy email fully releases the tenant from GoDaddy and turns it into a normal Microsoft tenant. At the moment, your email tenant is that of GoDaddy or your reseller - we require that your email be a standalone federated asset. This enables a number of advantages: full Entra ID access. app registrations, Graph API, conditional access, security defaults control, and no GoDaddy lock-in. Billing moves from your current provider to Microsoft.... and in the case of GoDaddy, you'll get more storage (outside of GoDaddy's reduced limitation). You will keep your email, OneDrive, SharePoint etc., and no interruption will be experienced. There will be zero data loss.

How Defederation Works

  • Create a temporary Global Admin
  • Break GoDaddy federation
  • Reset DNS auth
  • Reclaim Global Admin
  • Remove GoDaddy partner permissions

This is a known Microsoft-supported process. As a current customer of GoDaddy, they should support this process via telephone support, and Microsoft will also support the process directly. Our direct support incurs a fee because of the considerable back-and-forth required without full account access. Microsoft will do it at no cost (and they do it all the time).

Possibly Add a Global Admin [ GODADDY, REQUIRES A NEW USER ]

In GoDaddy Admin, add a new user and assign Global Administrator privileges. This process is a little hit-and-miss and largely depends on how your account was provisioned, so you should call GoDaddy support directly and ask them if this option will work for you (and it probably won't).

Force Tenant Takeover [ GODADDY, USUALLY THE EASIEST ]

The Microsoft supported process is usually the best option if you'd like to keep your account with GoDaddy but enable tenant ownership'. You should call the Microsoft support phone number from their website (and only their website, and not Google search results - this avoids scammers and baiters), and you should tell them this: "We own the domain and tenant. This tenant was provisioned by GoDaddy. We want to defederate and remove partner control". They will understand this and action the process for you. Microsoft will validate domain ownership, break partner federation, and restore native Entre admin access.

This process normally takes around 24 to 72 hours, and it will enable access to entry.mcirosoft.com and portal.azure.com. Application registrations will then be enabled.

This process removes GoDaddy from tenant-based control and gives you ownership. The tenant is yours.

Conclusion

There are a large number of solutions, such as inviting your GoDaddy email from within a fresh email that isn't associated with an Azure application, but all are prone to errors, and none are particularly bullet-proof. We're looking for a solid, robust, and scalable solution that won't break in the future, so the dozen or so alternative options are simply ignored.
