How to Return a Wistia Video with Shortcode or an Elementor Block

Wistia is a third-party video hosting service that is tailored towards business in that it provides full tracking, detailed analytics, statistics, and full customisations - all of which Yabber supports. Another seriously significant advantage of Wistia is that is permits us to track usage to the user level, thus marrying up with our own methodology, and further providing customisable triggers. This FAQ will simply show you how to embed a Wistia video into your website with our Elementor block or shortcode.

Wistia is a paid service although the platform does provide for three free videos. If you choose to trial the service (and we recommend all clients upload three videos to the service), then you should connect the API and Webhooks.

Wistia is an Advanced Tool: Using Wistia is easy - it's just a video hosting platform. However, the large number of features and options are typically designed for those that user higher-level funnel campaigns, so all the noise can make the platform a little challenging. You should initially treat Wistia as video hosting and nothing more.

Wistia Module is Extensive: The Wistia module is extensive. As such, in this FAQ we'll contain ourselves to the basic shortcode and Elementor features that'll render a video on your website. You should review the 'Related Wistia FAQs' at the bottom of this article for other Wistia features.

  The Result

If were to bypass the Elementor option and use shortcode, the string of [bmwistia v="bfflqddp8w"] will return the following:

A very large number of Elementor and shortcode options apply, and at the top of this list is the attribute that'll change the thumbnail image. Unlike YouTube, this may be set differently for the same video in different locations, and it advanced cases it may be dynamic (meaning that the image can be manufactured in real-time with a CTA designed specifically for that user... and it will address them by name - more on this another time).

We'll go ahead and add the thumbnail  and popover attributes to the shortcode, so [bmwistia v="7u4uabw1jv" thumbnail="https://www.beliefmedia.c .. ct-find-thumbnail.jpg" popover="yes"] (full https URL truncated for legibility) will returns as follows (the popover attributes launches the video in a modal):

Shortcode will be detailed shortly.

The Elementor option requires that you search for 'Wistia' in the search bar. Drag and drop the Wistia Video Embed  block onto your page and a large number of options are returned. The only required value is the video which is selected from a list of all your videos (we don't want you doing the caveman copy thing).

Wistia Video Embed

Pictured: The Elementor option requires that you search for 'Wistia' in the search bar. Drag and drop the 'Wistia Video Embed' block onto your page and a large number of options are returned. The only required value is the video which is selected from a list of all your videos.

The 'Inherit Default Values?' toggle switch is important. If set to 'Yes', all options are ignored and the Yabber-defined player profiles will apply (this is an advanced feature that is introduced in another FAQ).

The 'General Video Panel' provides the facility to alter the video appearance and functionality. The default values are generally suitable.

General Video Panel

Pictured: The 'General Video Panel' provides the facility to alter the video appearance and functionality. The default values are generally suitable.

You may upload an alternate thumbnail from your WP Media Library. The image should ideally be the same size as your video (such as 1920 x 1080, or 1280 x 720).

The last panel defines the SEO and Analytics options. These two options are enabled by default, so you'll want to explicitly switch them off if not required.

  Wistia Video Shortcode Options

If you're familiar with shortcode and comfortable with its use, a large number of attributes apply that'll alter the presentation of the video. In most cases you will set defaults in Yabber (an advanced topic discussed elsewhere) and ignore inline shortcode usage.

autoplay

If set to 'yes', the video will play as soon as it's ready. autoplay will not work on iOS and other mobile devices due to restrictions on bandwidth on cellular networks. You can add ?wvideo=hashedid to the end of any URL where a Wistia video is embedded, so that it will automatically start playing when your viewer visits that link.

wistia_defaults

The wistia_defaults is 'no' by default. If set to 'yes', values will be inherited by those defined in Yabber (or Wistia). This is an advanced option discussed in another FAQ.

popover

When popover="yes" is used, the video will launch in a full-screen modal when played - a good option to remove distractions.

qualitymax

Setting a qualitymax allows you to specify the maximum quality the video will play at. Wistia will still run bandwidth checks to test for speed, and play the highest quality version at or below the set maximum. Accepted values: 224, 360, 540, 720, 1080, 3840. Keep in mind, viewers will still be able to manually select a quality outside set maximum (using the option on the player) unless qualitycontrol is set to no. we ignore the qualitymin attribute in the shortcode as it simply complicates life.

playercolorchange & playercolor

When you want to alter the player colour, you must alter playercolorchange to yes and playercolor to a 6-digit hex value. for example, playercolorchange="yes" playercolor="000000".

controlsvisiblevnload

All of your controls (play buttons, play bar, volume) can be set to be visible as soon as the thumbnail loads for your video. This is default and should be set to 'no' if you're silly enough to disable - removing the option from users will just piss them off.

fullscreenbutton

If set to 'yes', the fullscreen button will be available as a video control. Showing this button is default and preferred behaviour.

muted

If set to 'yes', the video will start in a muted state. Defaults to 'no' (sound is enabled by default)

playbackratecontrol

If set to 'no', the playback speed controls in the settings menu will be hidden. Default is 'yes' - the option will be shown.

playbar

If set to 'yes' (the default value), the playbar--which includes the playhead, current time, and scrubbing functionality--will be available. If set to false, it is hidden.

playbutton

If set to 'yes' (the default value), the big play button control will appear in the centre of the video before play.

playsinline

When set to 'yes' (the default value), your videos will play within the native mobile player instead of Wistia's. This can be helpful if, for example, you would prefer that your mobile viewers start the video in fullscreen mode upon pressing play.

playsuspendedoffscreen

When a video is set to 'yes' (the default value), the video will pause playback when the video is out of view. For example, if the video is at the top of a page and you scroll down past it, the video will pause until you scroll back up to see the video again.

qualitycontrol

If set to 'no', the video quality selector in the settings menu will be hidden. Default is 'yes' - it will be shown.

resumable

The resumable feature causes videos to pick up where the viewer left off next time they load the page where your video is embedded. Possible values for the resumable embed option are yes and no and it defaults to auto. If auto, the resumable feature will only be enabled if the video is 5 minutes or longer, is not autoplay, and is not set to loop at the end. Setting resumable to 'yes' will enable resumable regardless of those factors, and 'no' disables resumable no matter what.

volumecontrol

When set to 'yes', a volume control is available over the video. Is 'yes' by default.

wmode

When set to transparent, the background behind the video player will be transparent - allowing the page colour to show through - instead of black. This applies e.g. if there's an aspect ratio discrepancy between the dimensions of the video and its container; this option is not connected to Alpha Transparency. This is an advanced option and may not apply depending on the Wistia container used. It can be ignored.

thumbnail

This is a fully-qualified URL to an alternate thumbnail image. Should be a full URL to a png or jpg image. The image should ideally be the same size as your video (such as 1920 x 1080, or 1280 x 720).

margin_top

This is the margin applied above the video container.

margin_bottom

This is the margin applied below the video container.

Elementor is clearly a preferred option when building pages. Keep in mind that most videos are simply applied to various locations on your website via a point-and-click system, in Yabber, so manual embedding is something that you will use when creating articles, and in most cases, the default rendering is suitable.

Shortcode attributes will be added when required. Please provide feedback if additional functionality is required.

  Tracking, Analytics and Reviewing Videos

The Wistia module in Yabber is discussed in other FAQs. It is important, however, to understand that all your video data is available in Yabber in much the same manner as it is in Wistia itself.

All video views are tracked to the user level, so if an email of a user is known it will be attached to the returned analytics data. If the user is not known, an email will be assigned to them and later updated when we identify the user further in the funnel.

All Wistia data is tracked. The number of times it is shown on a page, the number of plays, the length of each play, and each player interactions, is all recorded and sent back to Yabber in real-time for analysis - a rather vital tool if you're investing into your video marketing. Triggers may then be applied on the basis of certain actions.

Full, extensive, and highly granular graphing is returned in the Wistia module for all video interactions.
